Zinc’s cathodic protection pairs synergistically with the dense oxide layers formed by aluminum and magnesium, delivering up to several times more corrosion resistance than standard zinc coatings, especially under coastal humidity and industrial pollution. “Tests in salt fog chambers confirmed astonishing longevity,” explains Dr Elena Petrova, Senior Materials Scientist at MMK. “The alloy even self-heals minor scratches, stopping rust before it starts.”

Engineers report that the new coating boasts high adhesion, enabling easy application of polymer finishes without sacrificing protective quality. The Zn-Al-Mg alloy requires less material by weight compared to traditional class 275 zinc coatings, now classified as class 80 in protective power. This lighter coating reduces steel structure weight, easing transport emissions and promoting recyclability. “Sustainability is more than a trend, it is a necessity,” affirms Voronov. “By using less metal and extending product life, we cut resource use and environmental impact.”
