Pioneering Project Promises Pristine Production Paradigm

Ternium, a major steel producer in Latin America, has unveiled plans to set up a turquoise hydrogen pilot plant at its facilities in Pesquería, Mexico. This project, launched in collaboration with Tulum Energy, marks a significant stride in decarbonising industrial processes and reducing reliance on fossil fuels that emit CO₂.

 

Methane Metamorphosis Manifests Modern Manufacturing Model

At the heart of the project lies methane pyrolysis, a process that thermally breaks down methane into hydrogen and solid carbon. Unlike conventional steam methane reforming, this method does not release CO₂, offering a cleaner pathway to industrial hydrogen production. The plant will use either natural gas or biogas as feedstock, combining flexibility with sustainability.

 

Turquoise Technology Taps Transformative Transitional Tool

Turquoise hydrogen, so named because it sits between green and blue hydrogen on the carbon spectrum, promises cost competitiveness and lower environmental impact. Solid carbon produced alongside can be sold as a valuable by-product, adding economic incentives to the environmental benefits.

 

Strategic Synergy Strengthens Sustainable Steel Sector Shift

Ternium’s decision aligns with the steel industry’s global push to cut emissions. Hydrogen can eventually replace coal in blast furnaces, turning the traditionally carbon-heavy steel sector into a more climate-friendly industry. “This pilot will help us learn, adapt and scale up clean hydrogen in our operations,” said a senior Ternium executive.
