Electrolytic Enterprise & Eco Evolution Energise England’s East End

In an emblematic effort to decarbonise industrial manufacturing, Renewable Energy Systems has embarked on a pioneering green hydrogen initiative in Kent. Located at Kimberly-Clark’s Northfleet facility, the Northfleet Green Hydrogen Project aspires to replace carbon-intensive processes by generating H₂ through electrolysis. Since 2023, the site has undergone phased development, with backing from the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1).

Sustainable Synergy & Strategic Siting Strengthen Sectoral Shift

The project leverages the strategic location of Northfleet, close to London, ports & logistical arteries, to minimise transit emissions and facilitate scalable operations. The integration of hydrogen into an established manufacturing hub reinforces the shift towards sectoral sustainability. It aims to serve as a blueprint for embedding clean energy into legacy production systems.

Paper Process Parity & Pyrolysis Pivot Push Purposeful Progress

Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing line, which produces popular paper products like Andrex®, is central to the transition. The heart of the decarbonisation initiative lies in a novel dual-fuel boiler capable of operating on H₂ also natural gas as a backup. This design ensures operational continuity while gradually reducing fossil fuel reliance, creating a pathway to low-carbon paper-making.

Dual-Decarbonisation Design & Diligent Deployment Drive Efficiency

The facility’s hybrid boiler system is engineered to handle fluctuating hydrogen availability, ensuring resilience. Combined with H₂ storage capabilities, the system maximises flexibility, allowing it to absorb surplus renewable energy for hydrogen generation during off-peak periods. This approach helps flatten grid demand curves also enhances plant efficiency.

Governmental Greenlight & Grant Generosity Galvanise Growth

Selected as one of only 11 projects under HAR1, the Northfleet venture exemplifies policy alignment also public-private partnership. HAR1 is part of the UK Government’s vision to develop 10GW of green & blue hydrogen capacity by 2030. The funding and regulatory support have enabled RES to accelerate construction timelines and seek minor planning modifications for optimal efficiency.

Architectural Amendments & Adaptive Approvals Advance Ambitious Aims

To further optimise the facility’s configuration, RES submitted a revised planning application seeking minor adjustments to the original scheme. These modifications pertain to equipment layout, emissions handling, also site logistics. The changes aim to streamline operational flow while maintaining environmental integrity and community compatibility.

Circular Compatibility & Community Cohesion Cultivate Confidence

The project promises regional benefits beyond environmental gains. It aligns with local employment strategies, offering green jobs in engineering, operations & maintenance. Additionally, its community-centric planning process fosters public trust, positioning the facility as a civic asset, not merely a corporate enterprise.

Hydrogen Horizon & Heat Harmony Herald Industrial Integrity

The Northfleet Green Hydrogen Project is not merely a technological testbed, it represents a transition in industrial thinking. It symbolises how hydrogen, when pragmatically integrated, can elevate energy ethics while preserving economic functionality. With RES’s expertise and Kimberly-Clark’s legacy, the project encapsulates the future of sustainable manufacturing.

Key Takeaways

  • RES is building a green hydrogen facility at Kimberly-Clark’s Northfleet site to decarbonise paper production.

  • A dual-fuel boiler running on H₂ and natural gas enables a flexible, low-carbon transition.

  • The project, part of HAR1, supports the UK’s 2030 goal of 10GW hydrogen capacity.
