Sinewy Synergy Sparks Sustainable Shift

At the heart of Mineral Resources’ Onslow Iron project lies an audacious ambition to harmonise fossil fuel reliability & renewable ingenuity. The Ken’s Bore power station, boasting a capacity of 26 megawatts, leverages a hybrid blend of natural gas & solar, drastically cutting diesel consumption by 60 million litres yearly. According to Rowan Hill, MinRes General Manager Energy Operations & Development, “This hybrid facility operates with 30% lower greenhouse gas emissions than an equivalent diesel installation,” spotlighting a significant pivot toward sustainable resource extraction.

Solar Stratagem Sustains Site Supply

The site’s 3.8-megawatt solar array, assembled from 6,600 single-axis tracking panels, augments energy resilience by offsetting an additional 2.6 million litres of diesel per annum, preventing roughly 7,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. Strategically positioned near critical assets like crushers, reclaimers & loaders, this solar layer acts as a sine qua non in MinRes’ quest for a lower-carbon footprint. As James Ross, Manager Energy Engineering & Projects, observed, “Our design enables cost-effective power delivery & future decarbonisation initiatives.”

Battery Bastion Buffers Brief Blips

Reinforcing the hybrid mosaic, a 3.3-megawatt battery energy storage system delivers instantaneous output during rapid weather shifts, ensuring uninterrupted power. By stabilising demand peaks, it allows gas generators to function at higher efficiency. Hill highlighted this adaptability, noting the system’s role in “future-proofing operations & supporting full mine electrification,” underscoring MinRes’ commitment to innovative engineering.

Gas Grid Grants Growth Guarantees

Beneath the desert terrain, a purpose-built 16km high-pressure pipeline seamlessly channels gas from the Goldfields Gas Pipeline directly to Ken’s Bore. This engineering feat, MinRes’ first self-constructed pipeline, exemplifies vertical integration in energy strategy. “Combining gas, solar & battery storage under one roof allows operational flexibility & resilience,” added Ross, celebrating the cross-divisional collaboration behind the project’s success.

Emission Eclipsing Empowers Expansion

Collectively, these elements are forecast to curtail annual CO₂ emissions by over 40,000 metric tons, bolstering MinRes’ drive to lower its carbon intensity. The modular nature of the design also paves the way for incremental capacity growth, echoing the firm’s aspiration to unlock further reductions in greenhouse gases & align operations with global climate imperatives.

Innovation Illuminates Iron Industry

Beyond environmental gains, Onslow Iron demonstrates how renewable hybrid models can redefine industry economics. Launched ahead of schedule in May 2024, the project is rapidly scaling toward its nameplate capacity of 35 million metric tons per year, powered by this forward-looking energy blueprint. Hill remarked, “Our execution methodology has enabled efficient, scalable power solutions,” reinforcing MinRes’ reputation as a sector trailblazer.

Collaborative Confluence Catalyses Completion

Delivered by a small, integrated project team from MinRes’ Energy & Engineering and Construction divisions, the hybrid model’s swift realisation reflects streamlined governance & interdisciplinary collaboration. Ross praised this synergy, stating, “By working closely across teams, we built a flexible, expandable system ready for tomorrow’s mining demands.”

Decarbonisation Drives Development Dreams

As demand surges for low-carbon minerals, MinRes’ Onslow Iron hybrid model signals a pioneering step toward greener mining. Hill concluded, “This facility sets a benchmark for emissions reduction & mine electrification,” encapsulating MinRes’ dual mission: extracting critical resources & safeguarding environmental integrity.
