Pioneering Partnership & Prosperity Pact PropelledTata Steel UK’s ADAPT-EAF initiative, short for Accelerating the Development of Automotive and Packaging steel Technology for Electric Arc Furnace production, is not just a new research project but a strategic leap into the future of green steelmaking. Announced alongside 22 other Prosperity Partnerships by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, it represents a union of industry ambition and academic excellence. This partnership unites Tata Steel UK with three of the UK’s most respected universities—Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the University of Warwick, creating a formidable alliance aimed at reshaping the future of low-emission steel.

Algorithmic Alchemy & Alloy Advancement AlignedAt the project’s core is a world-leading, AI-powered platform designed to tackle one of the most complex challenges in modern steelmaking: managing and predicting the impact of residual elements in recycled steel. Electric arc furnace steelmaking relies heavily on scrap, which can introduce variations in composition. The AI model will analyze data from different scrap types to forecast their influence on steel quality and performance, helping engineers produce consistently high-grade steels for demanding uses like car bodies, food cans, and electrical applications.

Intelligent Innovation & Industry Integration IlluminatedBeyond algorithms, the initiative includes rapid alloy prototyping and testing, ensuring new steel grades are developed faster and validated thoroughly. This fusion of digital intelligence and metallurgical science aims to create steel products that meet stringent quality requirements while supporting environmental goals. According to Mr. Subodh Pandey, Tata Steel UK’s Vice President for Research Development and Technology, the project embeds sustainability at its core, making green steel more than a concept, it becomes an industry standard.

Funding Framework & Future-Ready Focus FortifiedThe £7 million funding, part of a larger £41 million EPSRC Prosperity Partnerships investment matched by £56 million from academia and industry, underscores the UK’s commitment to innovation-led growth. This financial backbone supports not only technology development but also academic collaboration, with 13 PhD studentships across Cambridge, Imperial, and Warwick. These studentships aim to nurture the next generation of steel scientists and engineers, ensuring the industry has the talent pipeline needed for long-term transformation.

Academic Alliance & Applied Ambition AmplifiedProfessor Howard Stone of the University of Cambridge, the project’s lead academic, highlighted that this collaboration merges data science and metallurgy to unlock the full potential of electric arc furnace technology. Dr. Jun Jiang from Imperial College London echoed this view, noting that expertise in advanced forming and structural integrity will help design steels with superior performance, positioning the UK as a world leader in sustainable steel innovation. Meanwhile, Professor Claire Davis from the University of Warwick emphasized the programme’s role in building local expertise and knowledge sharing.

Technological Transformation & Trade Target TranscendedThe ADAPT-EAF project comes at a pivotal time as Tata Steel UK prepares for groundbreaking at its Port Talbot site, where it plans to build a state-of-the-art electric arc furnace. This shift from traditional blast furnace production to electric arc technology is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 70%, aligning with national clean growth goals. By creating steels with lower environmental impact, the project supports the UK’s journey towards a circular economy and green manufacturing.

Clean Carbon Commitment & Circularity CultivatedThrough its research and collaboration, Tata Steel UK aims to prove that recycling-based steelmaking can produce premium products without compromising quality. This not only meets growing demand in sectors like automotive and packaging but also strengthens the UK steel industry’s resilience in an increasingly sustainability-driven global market. The ADAPT-EAF project exemplifies how cutting-edge technology and cross-sector partnerships can drive industrial decarbonization and foster long-term competitiveness.

Key Takeaways:

  • Tata Steel UK launched the £7 million ADAPT-EAF project to pioneer AI-powered low-carbon steel production.

  • Partnership with Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Warwick targets new high-grade steels for automotive and packaging industries.

  • The project supports the UK's clean growth vision, circular economy goals, and next-generation industrial innovation.
