Metallurgical Modernization Melds Machinery & Mission

In a move emblematic of engineering evolution, thyssenkrupp Steel has commissioned Primetals Technologies to modernize its slab sizing press at Hot-Strip Mill No. 2 in Duisburg, Germany. The upgrade forms part of a broader strategy to ensure operational resilience, future-proof technology, & improved industrial safety. This collaboration follows a successful prior upgrade at Hot-Strip Mill No. 4, strengthening the trust & technical camaraderie between the two companies.

Cycloconverter Configuration Catalyzes Core Capabilities

At the heart of the modernization lies the installation of a new cycloconverter for the main press motor. This advanced system will drive the core operations of the slab sizing press, improving precision & mechanical responsiveness. The cycloconverter technology, known for its reliability & control finesse, aligns seamlessly with thyssenkrupp’s ambitions for production consistency & power efficiency.

Drive Dynamics & Digital Dexterity Define Design

Beyond the main drive, several supporting systems, including pinch rolls, gap adjustment mechanisms, & roller tables, will undergo a digital transformation.Low-voltage multi-drive converters & DC converters will be installed, replacing aging components. Notably, the modernization will retain existing transformers & motors, reducing capital outlay while leveraging proven hardware assets.

Safety Solutions Shield Staff & Safeguard Systems

A tailored arc fault protection system will be integrated to elevate workplace safety. This mechanism is designed to detect & extinguish arc flashes with rapid precision, thereby protecting personnel & sensitive machinery. This initiative reflects an increasing industry emphasis on preventive technology for high-voltage environments.

Cooling Conundrum Conquered via Customized Configurations

To mitigate thermal risks, Primetals Technologies will implement a tailormade closed-loop air-to-water cooling system. Installed in the drive cabinet room, this solution promotes both energy efficiency & climate stability within the sensitive electronics area.Engineers expect this cooling strategy to substantially improve component longevity & reduce system downtime.

Sustainability Synergy Supports Spare Parts Supply Strategy

The overhaul ensures a future-proofed supply of spare parts, securing long-term operational integrity for thyssenkrupp’s slab sizing press.“This project provides a dual benefit, modern control plus reliable spares access, for years to come,” noted a senior Primetals spokesperson, underlining the strategic foresight embedded in the design.

Implementation Integration & Industrial Ingenuity Imminent

The comprehensive modernization includes implementation & startup services, ensuring seamless integration of new systems into ongoing operations.Scheduled for completion in Q3 2026, the upgrade underscores thyssenkrupp’s commitment to continuous improvement across its metallurgical infrastructure.

Duisburg Drive & Digital Discipline Deliver Distinctive Edge

Duisburg, already a linchpin of European steel innovation, stands to gain immensely from this initiative. The partnership between thyssenkrupp Steel & Primetals Technologies reaffirms the region’s role in next-generation steelmaking, where automation, safety, & sustainability converge.

Key Takeaways

  • thyssenkrupp Steel has chosen Primetals Technologies to modernize the slab sizing press at its Duisburg Hot-Strip Mill No. 2, with startup planned for Q3 2026.

  • The project includes a new cycloconverter, low-voltage multi-drive & DC converters, & a custom closed-loop cooling system to enhance energy efficiency & safety.
