Pioneering Portfolio Pruning Prompts Profound Restructure

On 18 June 2025, Anglo American plc declared a significant reshaping of its executive leadership, crafted to match the company's newly streamlined portfolio. This transformation followed the completion of the Valterra Platinum demerger & agreements to divest its steelmaking coal & nickel divisions. CEO Duncan Wanblad described the milestone as critical, noting, “We have made rapid progress with our portfolio simplification and we are on track to complete the strategic re-shaping of Anglo American to focus on our world-class positions in copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients.”

This decisive refocus stems from global demand growth for metals essential in clean energy, advanced technology & agriculture.

Strategic Stewardship & Succession Strengthen Structure

Effective 1 July, Ruben Fernandes takes on the consolidated role of Chief Operating Officer, tasked with overseeing Anglo American’s production businesses across Brazil, Chile, Kumba Iron Ore & Peru. Fernandes’ appointment reflects confidence in his operational leadership.

Meanwhile, Themba Mkhwanazi, who currently serves as Regional Director for Africa & Australia, will step down at the end of June. Wanblad praised him, saying, “We thank Themba Mkhwanazi for his outstanding contribution over the last 11 years in which he also led our thermal coal, Kumba Iron Ore and then our Bulks businesses as a whole. His passion as a leader to get the very best from his teams is beyond question and we wish him well in his next endeavours.”

Consolidated Command & Core Commodity Concentration

The refined executive leadership team from 1 July will include:

  • Duncan Wanblad as Chief Executive Officer

  • John Heasley as Chief Financial Officer

  • Ruben Fernandes as Chief Operating Officer

  • Richard Price as Chief Legal & Corporate Affairs Officer

  • Monique Carter as Chief People & Organisation Officer

  • Alison Atkinson as Chief Projects & Development Officer

  • Helena Nonka as Chief Strategy & Sustainability Officer

  • Tom McCulley as Chief Technical Officer, who also retains oversight of the Crop Nutrients business

  • Al Cook as CEO of De Beers Group

  • Matt Walker as CEO of Marketing

Al Cook will remain on the executive team until the separation of De Beers progresses, ensuring continuity.

Regional Representation Reinforced & Responsible Reporting

The CEOs of Anglo American’s production regions, Ana Sanches in Brazil, Patricio Hidalgo in Chile, Mpumi Zikalala at Kumba Iron Ore & Tony Power in Peru, will report directly to Fernandes. This ensures local operational insights inform group-level decisions.

Nolitha Fakude, Chair of Anglo American in South Africa, will continue reporting to Duncan Wanblad, focusing on national priorities, societal engagement & regional investment strategies.

Resilient Reorganisation Reflects Renewed Focus

The company’s strategy firmly pivots towards commodities forecasted to experience robust demand in global markets. Copper is critical for clean energy & electrification, premium iron ore supports low-carbon steelmaking, while crop nutrients bolster sustainable agriculture.

Wanblad emphasised, “Our streamlined leadership structure will strengthen decision-making, align teams around our core commodities and reinforce our ambition to deliver sustainable value.”

Robust Results & Revenue Reveal Resilience

In the last reported quarter, Anglo American’s revenues reached $11.5 billion, supported by steady demand for copper & iron ore. Production rose by 3% for copper, driven by higher grades in Chile, while premium iron ore output increased 2% from expanded capacity at Kumba Iron Ore.

Copper prices averaged $9,800 per metric ton, iron ore prices averaged $115 per metric ton, & crop nutrient sales volumes grew 6%. These figures helped offset weaker prices for steelmaking coal & nickel, reinforcing Anglo American’s pivot.
