Sovereign Strategy Spurs Sohar’s Steel Sector Sojourn

In a bold stride towards industrial reinvention, Oman has unveiled a monumental project that blends mineral wealth with metallurgical ambition. Jinnan Iron & Steel Group, a major Chinese steel conglomerate, has selected Sohar, a port city on Oman’s northern coast, for its first overseas iron ore concentrator facility. This strategic initiative is more than a capacity expansion, it is an emblem of Oman’s Vision 2040, which calls for economic diversification through the mining & metallurgical sectors.

Metso’s Mechanized Mastery Meets Middle Eastern Megaproject

Tasked with delivering the technological spine of this venture is Metso, a Finnish industrial behemoth known for its sophisticated minerals processing solutions. The company will supply a suite of cutting-edge equipment, including multiple Vertimill® VTM-4500 stirred mills and conventional ball mills. These grinding units, armed with metallic liners & a combined installed power of 25MW, are tailored to efficiently reduce ore to the desired particle size, ensuring optimal liberation & downstream recovery rates.

Thickening Tact & Tailored Technology for Tactical Throughput

The beneficiation process hinges on high-capacity liquid-solid separation, which Metso will deliver via five HRT, High Rate Thickeners,  powered by Reactorwell™ feed distribution systems. These thickeners are designed to recover water swiftly from slurry while maintaining a high underflow density, which is essential in arid environments like Oman. Water recovery not only improves operational sustainability but also supports environmental compliance amid tightening regional regulations.

Filter Fabrication Fortifies Feedstock Flexibility & Function

As filtration is crucial to the final concentrate quality, Metso will install six Larox® FFP3512 filter presses, renowned for their reliability, automation, & cake dryness. This equipment ensures that the DR-grade iron ore concentrate meets global quality benchmarks. Such dryness is vital for transporting the concentrate efficiently & preparing it for direct reduction steelmaking processes that use H₂, significantly lowering CO₂ emissions compared to traditional blast furnaces.

Pumping Precision Propels Process Pathways with Predictable Power

To guarantee the uninterrupted transfer of slurry throughout the process pipeline, Metso is deploying an extensive slurry pump package, inclusive of MD series mill discharge pumps. These pumps are built for endurance, abrasion resistance, and flow stability. Their inclusion illustrates a comprehensive approach to system integration, ensuring that each piece of equipment functions in symphony to maintain plant reliability & reduce unplanned downtime.

Geoeconomic Gambit Galvanizes Global Green Growth Goals

Jinnan’s Oman endeavor underscores a geoeconomic recalibration. The company, until now focused on domestic production, is tapping Oman’s proximity to Asian, African, & European markets, abundant mineral resources, and reform-driven regulatory landscape. By exporting DR-grade ore from Sohar, the plant will supply steelmakers aiming to adopt green steel technologies, especially in Europe, where carbon taxation is tightening the screws on conventional ironmaking inputs.

Corporate Collaboration Cemented Through Commitment & Capability

In Metso’s view, the Sohar plant is emblematic of its capability to serve as a turnkey technology partner. The order, though undisclosed in value, is logged in Metso’s Q2 2025 Minerals segment and represents a sizable share of its Metso Plus portfolio, a premium line of services offering extended warranties, remote monitoring, and lifecycle support. According to Piia Karhu, President of the Minerals business at Metso, the partnership with Jinnan is both “strategic & symbolic,” anchoring Metso’s presence in the Gulf region.

Sustainability Scaffold Shapes Steel Sector’s Sunrise Scenario

By targeting 12.6 million metric tons of annual output in DR-grade iron ore concentrate, the Sohar facility dovetails with global steel sector decarbonization. DR-grade ores are critical for emerging technologies like Electric Arc Furnaces using green H₂ as a reductant. Oman, rich in solar energy potential, is simultaneously investing in green H₂ production, paving the way for a vertically integrated, low-emission steel ecosystem that could redefine Middle Eastern metallurgy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Metso will equip Jinnan Iron & Steel Group’s greenfield iron ore concentrator in Sohar, Oman.

  • The facility will process 12.6 million metric tons of high-grade DR iron ore annually by 2027.

  • The delivery includes Vertimill® mills, HRT thickeners, Larox® filters & MD slurry pumps.
