In the evolving world of steelmaking, demand for steel boasting advanced mechanical properties is climbing sharply. This shift highlights the critical need to curb impurities like sulphur. Efficient desulphurization has thus become central in refining processes, directly shaping steel’s strength, resilience & market competitiveness.

 

Pragmatic Partnership Pioneers Process Precision

A collaborative project in Luleå, Sweden, brought together SSAB & Swerim to explore fresh approaches. Their goal was to minimize hot metal losses caused when slag, rich in iron content, is removed. Traditionally, the slag can trap 50 to 70 % iron, leading to costly wastage and lower production yields.

 

Innovative Injection Improves Iron Integrity

The research introduced nepheline syenite into the reagent calcium carbide during desulphurization. This blend altered the slag’s composition, making it finer-grained & easier to remove. The method reduced the amount of iron entrapped, leaving more iron in the molten metal ready for further processing.

 

Formidable Findings Foster Financial Feasibility

Results showed that hot metal losses after slag raking decreased by about 25 %. Beyond conserving valuable iron, this improvement enhances production efficiency. Higher hot metal yield means reduced need for intermediate storage & faster throughput from furnace to final product.

 

Concerted Collaboration Cultivates Cleaner Casting

Anna Carlsson Dahlberg of SSAB, Luleå, noted that the project aimed to meet new quality standards tied to desulphurization. Working with Swerim, the team refined processes to curb iron losses without compromising the steel’s quality. The result is steel that is both purer & produced more sustainably.

 

Strategic Support Strengthens Sustainable Steelmaking

The study received funding from the Swedish Energy Agency via Jernkontoret, underscoring how research funding can unlock tangible gains for industry. Other partners like SKW Metallurgy Sweden, Sibelco Nordic & KTH contributed, blending academic insight & industrial expertise to reshape steelmaking practices.

By innovating desulphurization, this method offers steelmakers a practical route to higher yields, cost savings & environmental gains. It reflects how focused research & industry collaboration can make even established processes more efficient, keeping European steelmaking competitive globally.
