Rio Tinto's first Pilbara-manufactured iron ore rail car rolled off the production line at Gemco Rail's new Karratha facility. The A$150 million partnership produces 100 rail cars locally, creating up to 25 regional jobs. The initiative follows completion of 40 rail cars at Gemco's Perth facility earlier in 2025. Each new rail car can transport up to 118 metric tons of iron ore. The cars will haul material from Rio Tinto's 18 Pilbara mines to coastal ports beginning December 2025. The partnership involves Rio Tinto, Gemco Rail, & CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Stock Co. Ltd, supported by the Western Australian Government, demonstrating commitment to local manufacturing & regional economic development.
