IMO's Impasse & Shipping's Sine Qua Non Sustainability Struggle
The International Maritime Organization's key environmental committee ended its latest meeting without adopting a global net-zero shipping framework for the second time running. Member states agreed to hold two more rounds of negotiations in September and November before a final decision meeting in December 2026. The shipping industry, which emits around nine hundred and forty million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, warned that continued delays are slowing investment in cleaner fuels and technologies needed to meet the organisation's 2050 net-zero target.
