Strategic Synergy Sparks Southeast Sustainability Surge

In a defining step towards a cleaner future, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia’s largest utility, has joined hands with Petroliam Nasional Bhd, or Petronas, to establish a green hydrogen hub in Terengganu. This ambitious plan blends hydroelectric power and floating photovoltaic systems, aiming to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the fast-growing green hydrogen value chain. Announced as part of the National Energy Transition Roadmap, the project showcases how public and private sectors can collaborate to drive climate action, industrial competitiveness, and energy security.

Floating Photovoltaics Forge Future-Facing Framework

Central to this project is the introduction of floating solar arrays on existing reservoirs, led by TNB Genco Sdn Bhd, TNB’s power generation arm, in partnership with Terengganu Inc. Floating photovoltaic technology helps optimise land use, prevents water evaporation, and naturally cools panels for higher efficiency. These installations complement hydropower production by supplying additional renewable capacity during peak sunlight hours, creating a balanced and resilient green energy ecosystem that supports year-round hydrogen production.

Hydropower Harmonies Harness Hydrogen Horizons

The hydrogen hub will harness power from Terengganu’s rich hydropower resources and newly added floating solar arrays, producing truly green hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be processed into derivatives such as green methanol and green ammonia. These are critical to decarbonising industries like shipping, power generation, and fertilisers. Using renewable resources ensures the final products meet international sustainability criteria, unlocking demand in export markets keen to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Petronas Partnership Powers Promising Pathways

Petronas brings extensive experience in energy infrastructure, technology, and market access, amplifying the project's success prospects. As a national oil and gas major transitioning towards renewables, Petronas offers expertise in large-scale project management and safety. The partnership is expected to open pathways to international markets, attracting foreign investment and making Malaysia a reliable supplier of low-carbon energy solutions across Asia.

Renewable Roadmap Reinforces Regional Resilience

This green hydrogen hub aligns closely with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which sets a vision for net-zero emissions by 2050. The roadmap outlines plans to diversify energy sources, increase renewable capacity, and modernise infrastructure. Green hydrogen is a cornerstone of this plan, seen as vital to balancing the country’s energy mix, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, and future-proofing the national economy against global climate risks.

Economic Empowerment Enriches Environmental Ethos

Beyond energy and climate benefits, the hydrogen hub supports local development by creating skilled jobs, training programmes, and business opportunities for suppliers and service providers. Terengganu’s choice as the location leverages existing hydropower infrastructure and ensures economic growth reaches coastal and rural areas. The project also advances research into energy storage, transport technologies, and environmental conservation, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Tradition & Technology Tether Towards Transformative Transition

By integrating floating photovoltaics into historic hydropower reservoirs, the project blends Malaysia’s rich heritage in hydroelectric power with forward-looking clean energy innovation. This hybrid model symbolises how traditional energy infrastructure can evolve rather than be replaced, delivering environmental benefits while respecting local communities, culture, and landscapes. It offers a model other nations can study to modernise existing assets sustainably.

Key Takeaways:

  • TNB & Petronas partner to launch Malaysia’s first large-scale green hydrogen hub in Terengganu.

  • Hydrogen production blends hydropower & floating solar, creating green ammonia & methanol for global export.

  • Project supports Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050.
