Monumental Memorandum Marks Milestone Move

Sims Limited & Alter Steel unveiled a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to establish a scrap supply & services partnership for Alter’s planned EAF in Queensland. “This MOU represents a strategic milestone for Sims. It reinforces our position as a key partner to Australia & New Zealand’s growing domestic steel sector,” remarked Stephen Mikkelsen, CEO & Managing Director of Sims Limited. This move aims to guarantee up to 550,000 metric tons of ferrous scrap supply annually while ensuring just-in-time inventory management & port access.

Proximate Partnership Promises Pinkenba Potential

Sims’ Pinkenba site, located roughly 1 km from Alter’s proposed EAF on Tingira Street, is central to the plan. The site’s staged development will transform it into a logistics & recycling hub, significantly shifting scrap movement from road to shipping & rail. This proximity, as both firms highlighted, underpins operational efficiency & volume certainty, enhancing Queensland’s low-carbon steel ambitions by 2028.

Industrial Investment Inspires Infrastructure Innovation

Alter Steel, backed by Westview Group, plans to invest over $750 million AUD in the Pinkenba mill, targeting 500,000 metric tons of low-emission reinforcing steel annually. This project is expected to generate about 600 construction jobs & over 220 permanent skilled positions. Grant Johnston, Alter’s Managing Director, noted, “Together, we’ll transform local scrap into high-value steel, cut emissions & keep manufacturing onshore.”

Circular Collaboration Counters Carbon Concerns

Electric arc furnace technology enables significant CO₂ emission reduction compared to traditional blast furnaces. By sourcing local scrap, Alter Steel & Sims aim to lower Australia’s dependence on imported steel & slash transport-related emissions. The facility will turn scrap metal into reinforcing steel for infrastructure projects, aligning industrial growth with sustainability.

Logistical Leverage Lifts Local Landscape

Sims’ investment to convert Pinkenba into a world-class recycling hub leverages strategic rail & port access. This shift promises reduced road congestion & operational cost savings. “The MOU provides a potential pathway to long-term volume certainty for both parties, supported by efficient logistics through the Pinkenba hub,” said Mikkelsen, highlighting the synergy of recycling & manufacturing.

Supply Sine Qua Non Secures Sectoral Stability

The agreement will ensure Alter’s stable scrap supply, a sine qua non for consistent steel production. Exclusive sourcing from Sims supports local recycling networks while guaranteeing material quality & reliability. Both firms stress this model strengthens Australia’s domestic steel supply chain resilience against global market fluctuations.

Sustainability Strategy Showcases Sectoral Shift

Beyond numbers, the partnership reflects a broader pivot towards green steel. Sims’ responsible operations & Alter’s EAF plan align with national goals to decarbonise heavy industry. The project promises not just economic benefit but reputational advantage as Queensland becomes a hub for low-emission, locally produced steel.

Visionary Venture Validates Vertical Value

This MOU complements Alter’s recent milestones, including conditional site approval & an agreement with global technology partner Danieli. Johnston added, “This collaboration with Sims completes the supply chain to deliver the cleanest steel in Australia.” As construction begins in 2026 & operations by 2028, the partnership aspires to transform local scrap into valuable, lower-carbon steel products.
