IGNITE will explore alloy design strategies to extend the lifespan and resilience of steel products. Research will delve into fatigue‑resistant alloys and remanufacturable structures, informed by Swansea’s Materials Engineering team. These innovations are crucial for sectors, like defence and aerospace, that demand long‑lasting, low‑CO₂ solutions.

 

Industrial Integration Inspires Inclusive Innovation Across Stakeholders

More than 30 partners span the UK steel ecosystem: academia (Leicester, Sheffield, Warwick), and industry leaders including British Steel, Network Rail, Nissan & Rolls-Royce. This ensures innovations are demand-led, addressing real‑world needs, from rail infrastructure to automotive, defence and energy systems.

 

Skills Symphony Secures Sectoral Sustainability and Smart Capabilities

The hub aligns with Swansea’s SWITCH‑On Skills programme to upskill workers in electric‑arc furnace operations and low‑carbon methods. IGNITE acknowledges that innovation is effective only with trained talent, ensuring the next generation of steel professionals are ready for green‑steel production.

 

Research Resonance Reinforces Resilient, Circular Steel Supply

IGNITE builds upon the £35 M SUSTAIN hub (2019–2026), which pursued zero‑waste ironmaking and smart processing. SUSTAIN achieved breakthroughs in blast‑furnace efficiency at Port Talbot (saving £1.1 M annually), waste‑heat recovery, and digital metallurgy. IGNITE now scales these gains toward true green‑steel sovereignty.

Fully funded via £11 M from EPSRC’s Sustainable Manufacturing programme and £11.9 M partner contributions, IGNITE exemplifies strategic collaboration .
