Protonic Pursuit: Pioneering PEM Plant Pushes Past Parameters

The H2FUTURE hydrogen pilot project in Linz, initiated in 2019, marked a milestone in industrial-scale proton exchange membrane electrolysis. As one of the longest-operating PEM pilot plants globally, it produces up to 1,200 cubic meters of green hydrogen per hour using renewable energy. The existing system, featuring twelve stacks of 50 electrolysis cells each, has already produced hundreds of tons of green hydrogen, cementing its role in industrial decarbonization.

Strategic Synergy: Stalwart Steelmaker & Sustainable Supplier Synchronize

The collaboration between voestalpine and VERBUND showcases a seamless alliance between heavy industry and clean energy. While voestalpine explores hydrogen as a core element of its green steel transition, VERBUND, Austria’s largest power utility, ensures optimized hydrogen management across variable electricity flows. The project balances intermittent renewable inputs through one metric ton hydrogen storage tanks and responsive compression, preserving consistency in supply.

Metallurgical Metamorphosis: Milestone Moves in Modernizing Manufacturing

As part of voestalpine’s greentec steel initiative, the firm targets net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050. The first phase includes commissioning electric arc furnaces in Linz and Donawitz by 2027, replacing two coal-based blast furnaces. Hydrogen produced at H2FUTURE will be a key enabler in shifting from carbon-intensive processes to climate-friendly alternatives, aligning with European Green Deal ambitions.

Facility Fortification: Futuristic Features Fuel Functional Flexibility

The expansion includes building a purification & compression plant, five cylindrical hydrogen storage tanks, and new hydrogen loading infrastructure. Designed to adapt to volatile renewable inputs, these installations allow hydrogen to be stored at optimal purity and pressure, enabling consistent quality for industrial use. The facility can rapidly adapt to grid fluctuations, contributing to energy system stability.

Technological Tenacity: Trials, Timelines & Tactical Targets

Preparation for the H2FUTURE Follow-up has been underway since 2023. Current works involve construction of critical hardware & integration into the Linz steel plant’s ecosystem. Functional testing begins in January 2026, while project results will be evaluated by December 2026. The research phase will conclude in 2029, offering crucial insights for large-scale hydrogen infrastructure across the European steel industry.

Leadership Lexicon: Luminaries Laud Long-Term Legacy

Herbert Eibensteiner, CEO of voestalpine AG, underscored the plant’s importance in the company’s transformation plan, noting its contribution to the greentec steel program. VERBUND CEO Michael Strugl emphasized the plant’s robustness in managing production fluctuations, calling it a cornerstone for future hydrogen scaling. Their shared vision demonstrates how industry & energy sectors can together drive sustainable innovation.

Decarbonization Drive: Demonstration Data to Determine Direction

H2FUTURE not only supports voestalpine’s internal research but also serves as a testbed for broader hydrogen applications. Data collected will shape future large-scale electrolysis designs, storage models, and energy management systems. The pilot’s success could open pathways for replication in other heavy industries seeking to slash emissions and ensure energy resilience.

Key Takeaways:

  • voestalpine & VERBUND are investing €16.4 million to expand the H2FUTURE hydrogen pilot plant.

  • The facility produces 1,200 cubic meters of green hydrogen per hour & includes new storage and purification units.

Project aims to support voestalpine’s goal of net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050, aligned with the greentec steel roadmap.
