Combative Counsel & Calls Catalyse Canadian Curbs

Cleveland-Cliffs’ Chief Executive Lourenco Goncalves, known for his outspoken style, called on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to introduce “significant” steel import tariffs to protect Canada’s domestic industry. Speaking candidly on Monday, Goncalves stressed that strong trade protections were vital to secure local jobs and manufacturing capacity, reflecting his alignment with US protectionist policies. “Carney and his cabinet should enact significant trade protections,” Goncalves declared, underlining his belief in aggressive measures to defend national industry.

Fiscal Frustration & Federal Fed Feud Fuels Ferocity

Beyond tariffs, Goncalves turned his focus to US monetary policy, voicing frustration toward Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Following Cleveland-Cliffs’ second-quarter earnings call, he remarked, “We need a new Fed chairman appointed as soon as possible.” He argued that Powell’s stance on keeping interest rates high is stifling consumer demand for cars and homes. “Once Chairman Jerome Powell is gone, and that’s now a matter of when, not if, and as soon as interest rates come down by 50 or 75 basis points, the automotive sector will take off again,” he said, blaming the Fed’s reluctance to act.

Domestic Demand & Defensive Duties Drive Durability

Goncalves praised the Trump administration’s ongoing commitment to tariffs and trade barriers, saying, “The Trump administration continues to show strong support to both the domestic steel and the domestic automotive sectors.” He forecast that these policies would keep bolstering demand, adding, “We expect this trend to continue.” His view aligns with the company’s belief that protective tariffs help local producers remain competitive against lower-cost imports, thereby safeguarding jobs and critical industries.

Automotive Alliance & American Advantage Amplified

Positioning Cleveland-Cliffs as a major automotive steel supplier, Goncalves linked the firm’s strategy to rising domestic demand. “Our return to generating meaningful free cash flow and rapidly reducing debt is in sight,” he said. Emphasising that US-based competitors have an edge due to trade protections and local supply chains, Goncalves predicted that foreign rivals would need to acquire American capacity to remain relevant. “Cleveland-Cliffs’ assets, business and footprint are uniquely positioned to benefit from this new reality,” he added.

Key Takeaways

  • Cleveland-Cliffs CEO urged Canada to impose strict steel tariffs to protect local industry.
