Titanic Trestle Triumph: Bharuch Bridge Bolsters Bullet Train Blueprint

In a significant infrastructural milestone, NHSRCL successfully launched a 100-metre-long steel bridge over the Dedicated Freight Corridor near Bharuch in Gujarat. The steel behemoth, weighing approximately 1,400 metric tons, was installed as part of India’s first high-speed rail corridor connecting Mumbai to Ahmedabad. This is the eighth steel bridge completed in Gujarat out of the 28 planned for the entire 508-km stretch.

Fabrication Feat & Freight-Friendly Framework

The mammoth steel bridge stands 14.6 metres tall and spans 14.3 metres wide. It was fabricated at a state-of-the-art facility in Trichy and transported via specially designed heavy-duty trailers. The engineering marvel was launched using an 84-metre-long launching nose weighing nearly 600 metric tons, ensuring smooth installation without disrupting freight operations on the DFC line.

Bolt By Bolt Brilliance: Precision & Perpetuity in Planning

Structural integrity was paramount in the bridge’s construction. NHSRCL reported the use of approximately 55,300 Tor-Shear Type High Strength bolts for seamless jointing. Coated with a C5 corrosion-resistant paint system and mounted on elastomeric bearings, the bridge is engineered for a centennial lifespan. Such meticulousness underscores the project's commitment to durability and long-term safety.

Jacking Juggernauts: Mechanised Might Meets Manual Mastery

Erected 18 metres above ground on temporary trestles, the bridge was meticulously pulled into position using a duo of semi-automatic jacks, each with a 250-ton capacity, and precision-guided mac-alloy bars. The mechanism facilitated a steady and safe launch, showcasing a fusion of engineering expertise and technological innovation.

Traffic Tact & Trestle Timing: Disruptions Diminished Diligently

Launching the bridge required careful coordination to minimise disruption along the DFC. NHSRCL executed traffic blocks in multiple phases, ensuring operational continuity for freight trains. These traffic management strategies were applauded for maintaining logistical efficiency while allowing complex engineering work to proceed unhindered.

Viaduct Victories & Velocity Visions Realised

With this latest launch, the Bullet Train project has completed over 300 km of viaducts, a crucial part of the elevated track system. According to NHSRCL, the viaduct construction includes 257.4 km via Full Span Launching Method, 37.8 km by Span-by-Span, 0.9 km of steel bridges, 1.2 km of pre-stressed concrete bridges, and 2.7 km incorporated into station structures.

Span Specifications & Structural Statistics Simplified

The massive scale of the construction becomes clearer through the numbers: 257.4 km of viaducts used 6,455 full-span girders of 40 metres each, while the SBS technique required 925 similar spans. The project’s steel bridges feature spans ranging from 60 to 130 metres, tailored to traverse rivers and key intersections along the route.

Momentum Manifested: Maharashtra–Gujarat Mega Mobility Mission

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, executed under the “Make in India” initiative, continues to make headway with ambitious infrastructure milestones like the Bharuch steel bridge. With 17 of the 28 steel bridges located in Gujarat alone, the corridor is poised to redefine rail travel through faster connectivity, advanced engineering, and a robust, future-ready framework.

Key Takeaways

  • NHSRCL launched a 100-m-long steel bridge weighing 1,400 metric tons over DFC tracks near Bharuch.

  • 300 km of viaduct construction is now complete on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.

  • The bridge used over 55,000 high-strength bolts, designed for a 100-year lifespan, with traffic blocks managed in phases.
