Pig Iron Powerhouse & Pioneering Project Propel Production Precision

Severstal, one of Russia’s largest steelmakers, has initiated an ambitious overhaul of Blast Furnace No. 4, nicknamed “Vologzhanka,” located at the Cherepovets Steel Mill, CherMK. With an annual pig iron output capacity of 2.4 million metric tons, the BF-4 ranks as the third-largest furnace at the site. The overhaul began this week, forming part of the company’s broader long-term modernisation program aimed at revitalising core production assets.

Strategic Stockpiling & Seamless Scheduling Safeguard Supply Stability

To ensure uninterrupted delivery of finished steel products during the temporary shutdown, Severstal has proactively stockpiled steel slabs. This strategic buffer will help the company meet customer schedules and honour delivery contracts, thereby maintaining market reliability despite the operational pause. The restart of the upgraded furnace is expected in the third quarter of this year, setting the stage for enhanced performance in the second half.

Fiscal Fortitude & Forward-Facing Funding Fuel Futuristic Furnace Fixes

Valued at 22 billion roubles ($278 million), the BF-4 overhaul represents a major capital commitment by Severstal. The investment underscores the company's intent to futureproof its infrastructure amidst evolving industry demands for sustainability and efficiency. The funds will be allocated across technological upgrades, structural replacements, and modern automation systems, all designed to optimise operational throughput.

Eco-Efficiency Enhancements & Emission Evasion Elevate Environmental Ethos

Central to the furnace upgrade is a shift toward higher use of iron ore pellets, which are more energy-efficient and result in lower emissions compared to sinter feed. Alongside this, Severstal is integrating state-of-the-art aspiration systems to curb airborne particulates, automated valve controls for precision burdening, also comprehensive gas cleaning units. These installations are aimed at significantly reducing dust emissions and enhancing air quality for on-site workers.

Technocratic Transformation & Thermal Tuning Tailor Technological Triumph

Major technical upgrades being undertaken include the replacement of the bell-less top charging system, cooling mechanisms, refractory linings, hot-blast stoves, the casting yard, burdening control systems, also associated gas filtration components. The revamped setup will not only prolong the furnace’s lifespan but also allow better energy management during smelting operations, thus improving resource utilisation and product consistency.

Collaborative Craftsmanship & Contractor Coordination Cement Construction Cadence

The project is being executed primarily by Severstal’s internal engineering teams, ensuring in-house quality control and deep integration of expertise. Domnaremont Center has been appointed as the general contractor, coordinating construction and scheduling across various subsystems. Severstal-Proekt leads the design aspects, while heavy equipment repairs are being undertaken by SSM-Tyazhmash, known for their robust metallurgical machinery solutions.

Resilient Rebuilding & Revitalisation Reinforce Russia’s Rolling Resources

This overhaul is part of a larger trend among Russian steelmakers adapting to international market shifts and domestic industrial reforms. By modernising blast furnaces, Severstal is positioning itself to meet both rising product quality expectations and tightening environmental mandates. The investment not only supports Severstal’s competitive edge but also sets a benchmark for sustainable metallurgy practices in the region.

Modernisation Momentum & Metallurgical Milestones Mold Market Might

As Severstal continues its industrial metamorphosis, the successful relaunch of BF-4 is anticipated to boost overall production capacity and reduce operational costs. Once operational, the new furnace design will allow Severstal to respond swiftly to fluctuating global demand, reinforcing its market agility. The company’s forward-thinking approach ensures that steelmaking remains not just a legacy industry, but a modernised, environmentally conscious economic pillar.
