Precursor Prowess & Purity Propel POSCO’s Pioneering Plant in Gwangyang
2025年6月17日星期二
Synopsis: - POSCO Future M has inaugurated its Gwangyang precursor plant, ensuring self-sufficiency in battery materials like high-purity nickel sulfate. Key figures from POSCO Holdings, Gwangyang City, & related entities joined the ceremony celebrating enhanced supply chain control.
Ceremonial Commencement Celebrates Cathode Chain Completion
On June 10, POSCO Future M marked a monumental milestone by inaugurating its precursor plant in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do Province. This facility, nestled within the Yulchon Industrial Complex, boasts an annual production capacity of 45,000 metric tons, enough to support the creation of batteries for 500,000 electric vehicles. The ceremony saw participation from key dignitaries including President Gi-chen Eom, Seong-rae Cheon, & Gwangyang Mayor In-hwa Jeong.
Supply Sovereignty Secured via Strategic Self-Sufficiency
This new plant heralds the completion of POSCO Group’s closed-loop battery supply system, spanning raw materials, semi-finished precursors, & finished cathode materials. By internalizing precursor production, the company fortifies its resilience against global supply chain volatilities. The move comes at a time when policies like the Foreign Entity of Concern in the U.S. have made supply chain independence crucial for eligibility under the IRA tax credit scheme.
Nickel Nexus Nurtures Non-Chinese Navigability
The Gwangyang facility sources its high-purity nickel sulfate internally from within POSCO Group, sidestepping Chinese dependencies. POSCO processes non-Chinese nickel raw materials & provides them to the plant, while POSCO HY Clean Metal supplies recycled nickel sulfate, promoting both sustainability & strategic autonomy. This shift addresses Korea’s past reliance, where over 90% of precursor imports originated from China as of March.
Purification Precision Promotes Performance Perfection
Precursors, comprising nickel, cobalt, & manganese, are crucial for determining cathode material quality. POSCO Future M’s new plant enhances control over impurities & allows for tailored composition, enabling rigorous quality management. This precision is vital, as even minor raw material variations can impact battery performance, durability, & safety.
Cathode Continuity & Capacity Catalyze Competitiveness
The precursor output from this facility feeds directly into cathode material manufacturing for Ultium Cells, POSCO’s strategic battery manufacturing partner. With this backward integration, supply continuity is assured, & POSCO Future M is poised to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding EV ecosystem, especially in the U.S. & EU markets, where regulatory compliance & clean sourcing are increasingly scrutinized.
Regional Renaissance & Recruitment Rejuvenate Rural Roots
Beyond technical gains, the project brings substantial regional development. The company already operates both cathode & precursor plants in Gwangyang, supporting around 700 employees. Furthermore, a new NCA high-nickel cathode plant with a capacity of 52,500 metric tons/year is under construction, generating opportunities in local construction, & future employment for plant operations staff.
Lithium Lineage Leverages Localized Logistics
POSCO Future M had earlier secured lithium supply independence, sourcing lithium from POSCO Pilbara Lithium Solution (Australia), POSCO Lithium Solution (Argentina), & POSCO HY Clean Metal (recycled sources). This lithium autonomy, now complemented by precursor production sovereignty, solidifies its holistic control over key battery components, ensuring supply stability & cost competitiveness.
Market Mastery & Materials Maturity Motivate Momentum
Looking forward, POSCO Future M aims to cement its position as a top-tier global battery materials provider. By strengthening its internal supply chain, investing in R&D, & expanding its product portfolio, the company intends to proactively respond to market fluctuations, regulatory changes, & customer expectations, especially amid tightening global trade policies.
Key Takeaways
POSCO Future M’s Gwangyang precursor plant can produce 45,000 metric tons annually, supporting battery production for 500,000 EVs.
The company secured nickel & lithium supply chains internally, reducing dependence on China & ensuring FEOC compliance.
Around 700 workers are employed at the site, with further job creation expected from a new high-nickel cathode material plant.
