US Steel: Oil Spill & Statutory Sanctions

United States Steel has been ordered to pay $135,000 & tighten pollution controls after oil from its Irvin Works plant leaked into the Monongahela River near West Mifflin. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection acted after at least seven citizen complaints about oily sheens, some stretching more than a mile downstream. The company now faces daily inspection duties, live camera monitoring, strict deadlines for a full investigation, & heavy automatic fines for future leaks. OREACO explains how this case reflects rising expectations on industrial river protection.
