Arctic's Abyssal Aquifers & Glaciers' Clandestine Cascade

Scientists discover thirty-seven subglacial lakes hidden beneath glaciers in Canada's Arctic, thirty-five of them entirely new to science. The lakes form a complex network beneath the ice and can drain rapidly, causing glacier surfaces to drop by more than one hundred metres in just a few months. Researchers say the discovery could improve understanding of how quickly Arctic glaciers are melting and contributing to global sea level rise. More lakes are expected to be found as analysis of satellite data continues.
