Valorisation Vision Validates Voluminous Ventures

AM/NS India’s initiative marks a transformative step in sustainable infrastructure. The firm now holds the exclusive licence to apply CSIR–CRRI’s steel slag valorisation technology at its Hazira plant, Gujarat. Under the brand ‘AM/NS Aakar,’ specially processed slag meets stringent national technical guidelines. “We are proud to lead this green transformation,” said Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice President, Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India. The project exemplifies the firm’s commitment to circular economy, recycling 1.70 million metric tons of slag annually into durable road materials.

 

Circular Commitments Catalyse Concrete Change

India’s steel sector produces over 19 million metric tons of slag annually. Left untreated, it risks undermining mechanical strength & durability in road construction. CSIR–CRRI’s technology converts slag into high-quality aggregates, aligning infrastructure growth with sustainability. “The steel slag road technology is a game-changer,” said Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist & inventor of the method. The processed aggregates outperform natural stone in durability, creating stronger, longer-lasting roads while conserving natural resources.

 

Green Gains Garner Global Gravitas

This breakthrough is more than a domestic milestone. AM/NS India’s one-kilometre, six-lane road in Hazira was hailed by the India Book of Records & Asia Book of Records as possibly the world’s first of its kind. Recently, the world’s first coastal steel slag road inside Hazira port & NH-53 diamond bourse road in Surat used AM/NS Aakar, highlighting India’s exportable innovation potential. The global shift towards circular economies makes such advances a critical competitive edge.

 

Economic Efficacy Elevates Environmental Endeavours

Steel slag valorisation directly supports India’s $2 trillion circular economy ambition, expected to create nearly 10 million jobs by 2050. Processed slag cuts construction costs while extending road lifespan, lowering long-term public expenditure. Dhar emphasised, “This sets a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure & underscores our commitment to reduce CO₂ emissions.” Using recycled materials also mitigates quarrying’s environmental impact, preserving ecosystems & supporting India’s climate targets.

 

Technological Triumph Transforms Traditional Tarmac

The licensed technology scientifically stabilises slag, addressing issues like volumetric expansion caused by free lime & magnesia. AM/NS India’s expertise ensures consistent quality control, key to large-scale road applications. “The direct use of untreated steel slag is risky, but processed slag meets all performance standards,” Pandey explained. The controlled process transforms what was once industrial waste into a high-value product essential for modern infrastructure.

The Indian government’s focus on circularity & green construction aligns seamlessly with such initiatives. Policy measures under discussion include tax incentives, public procurement targets & research funding for low-carbon materials. Steel slag generation may surge to 60 million metric tons by FY 2030, driven by India’s plan to produce 300 million metric tons of steel annually.
