Monumental Milestone Marks Manufacturing Might
The New Plate Mill at SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant has set an all-time high by rolling 5,109 metric tons of plates on July 10, surpassing its earlier record of 5,050 metric tons from December 2024. Commissioned in 2014, the mill’s recent feat reflects sustained operational excellence and a sharpened focus on efficiency, driven by skilled teams & modern processes.
Spectacular Slab Success Sets Shining Standard
Beyond plate rolling, the mill also achieved its highest-ever single-day slab rolling record by processing 383 slabs, an improvement over the previous best of 355 slabs. This impressive achievement underlines the plant’s operational agility and commitment to scaling up production without compromising on consistency or quality.
Shift Splendour Showcases Strategic Synergy
During the ‘C’ shift, the mill further pushed its boundaries by achieving its best-ever shift tonnage of 1,834 metric tons. This success is credited to close coordination across teams and leadership that encouraged precision and speed. As recognition, three executives received books as tokens of appreciation, highlighting SAIL’s emphasis on teamwork & motivation.
Laboratory Leap Leads to Lofty Quality Levels
In a parallel initiative to bolster quality, Rourkela Steel Plant has signed a contract with M/s Sterling and Wilson Pvt Ltd to establish a cutting-edge Product Testing Laboratory. This advanced facility, set to follow NABL accreditation standards, will test special steel grades produced by the New Plate Mill, Special Plate Plant & Hot Strip Mill-2, supporting both in-house assessments & third-party inspections.
Futuristic Facility Fuels Flexible Functionality
The new lab will be developed over 25 months by the Projects Department of RSP, with consultancy from CET Ranchi. Once operational, it will enable the plant to meet evolving customer specifications more efficiently while supporting quality certification needs. The move underscores RSP’s proactive approach to quality assurance in an increasingly demanding market.
Renaissance of Rourkela Reinforces Robust Reputation
These milestones are a testament to SAIL Rourkela’s enduring vision to blend productivity with precision. Beyond figures, the story reflects years of capacity building, training and strategic investments. Such projects reinforce the plant’s reputation as a leader in advanced steel production across domestic & global markets.
Synergistic Strategy Secures Sustainable Success
By aligning record production with advanced testing capabilities, RSP exemplifies a holistic strategy that prioritises both scale & quality. This dual approach positions the plant to better serve industries that demand stringent standards, while keeping pace with technological changes and customer expectations.
