Pre-Salt Prowess & Petrobras Partnership Propel Progress

In the pre-salt waters off the coast of Brazil, an engineering evolution has quietly unfolded. Tenaris, the global steel pipe manufacturer, has completed the first-ever installation of Dopeless® technology for large-diameter weld-on connectors in the Búzios offshore field, operated by Petrobras. The debut marks a critical leap toward full wellbore integration of this environmentally conscious technology.“This operation sets a new global benchmark in conductor & surface casing,” said Renato Catallini, President of Tenaris Brazil.

Dope-Free Dynamics & Deepwater Deployment Demonstrated Diligently

The Dopeless® application began with a 36-inch conductor casing featuring TenarisHydril BlueDock® connectors coated in the company’s proprietary dry film. This mill-applied coating eliminates the need for traditional lubricants, commonly known as “dope”, which are typically required during pipe storage & running.“The coating simplifies operations, reduces risk & improves rig floor safety,” emphasized Catallini. “No messy cleaning or manual greasing is needed.”

Casing Confidence & Connector Capabilities Cultivate Credibility

Following the conductor string’s successful deployment, a second installation soon followed, an 18-inch surface casing string, also dopeless, in another well within the same field. Both installations were flawless, with no rejects or re-makeups, according to Tenaris’s technical teams.Representatives from Tenaris’s Field Services & Technical Sales departments were present throughout to ensure precision execution & to offer on-site support.

Safety Synergy & Subsea Systems Shape Safer Spaces

Tenaris's Dopeless® solution goes beyond environmental benefits, it addresses critical safety challenges in offshore operations. With Automatic Anti-Rotational Keys, the system ensures hands-free connector activation, removing workers from the high-risk red zone of the rig floor.“This significantly lowers potential injuries,” stated a Petrobras site supervisor. “We saw an immediate improvement in operational safety metrics.”

Sustainability Salience & Steel Standards Strengthen Strategy

Developed over two decades, Dopeless® technology reflects Tenaris’s broader sustainability roadmap. Since its inception in Norway in 2003, the system has been deployed in over 60 countries, accumulating more than 74 million feet of dopeless tubulars.“From the Norwegian North Sea to the Brazilian Pre-Salt, Dopeless® has matured into the industry’s most reliable dope-free solution,” said Tomás Castiñeiras, Tenaris’s Global Technical Sales Director.

Innovation Integration & Industry Influence Inspire Implementation

The Brazilian deployment represents the culmination of years of R&D, cross-functional collaboration & field trials. Castiñeiras, who introduced the technology in Norway, reflected on the moment: “We’ve dreamed of this. It’s now a reality that Tenaris can offer Dopeless® coverage across the entire well, no other OCTG manufacturer can make this claim.”The move is expected to inspire other operators across Latin America & globally to adopt similar dope-free innovations.

Efficiency Enhancements & Environmental Edge Evidently Effective

Eliminating traditional dope lubricants not only reduces chemical waste but also simplifies logistics, enhances pipe storage life & slashes offshore cleaning time.Operators no longer need to manually clean threads or lubricate connections, resulting in faster run times & lower operational costs. This dual benefit of efficiency & ecology appeals to ESG-driven drilling programs.

Brazilian Breakthrough & Borehole Brilliance Bridge Boundaries

Brazil’s successful implementation cements its place at the forefront of sustainable energy extraction in the Southern Hemisphere. Tenaris’s Dopeless® innovation aligns well with Petrobras’s long-term strategy for low-impact exploration & production. As Catallini concluded, “This is not just a technological upgrade, it’s a paradigm shift in how we drill, connect & conserve.”

Key Takeaways

  • Tenaris completed the first large-diameter Dopeless® connector installation in Brazil’s Búzios offshore field, in partnership with Petrobras.

  • The technology eliminates the need for thread dopes, enhancing rig floor safety through hands-free operations using automatic anti-rotational keys.

  • Tenaris has now deployed Dopeless® technology in over 60 countries, totaling over 74 million feet, offering full wellbore coverage without lubricants.
