Strategic Selection, Scrutiny & Sustainable Steel

Alter Steel has embarked on what it calls a "deliberate process" to modernise Australian steelmaking by finalising a $750 million contract with Italian powerhouse Danieli. This agreement covers the full suite of technology & equipment for the company’s planned steel mill in Pinkenba, Queensland. Managing director Grant Johnston explained, “We undertook a deliberate process to ensure the technology selected was proven, commercially scalable and fit for Australia’s future manufacturing needs.” This extensive selection process, he noted, positions Alter Steel to deliver cleaner, faster & more resilient steel supplies to Queensland’s rapidly expanding construction sector.

Methodical Mapping, Market Mindfulness & Modern Manufacturing

Alter Steel’s agreement did not come overnight. Over the past eighteen months, the company thoroughly reviewed global steelmaking technologies & engaged leading original equipment manufacturers worldwide. In the last six months, this research turned into close collaboration with Danieli, covering detailed engineering, site layout, and essential service connections. Johnston highlighted the company's commitment, saying, “We carefully considered every technical & economic factor to ensure the chosen system aligns with both current needs and the industry's evolution over coming decades.”

Italian Ingenuity, Innovative Integration & Industrial Impact

The chosen solution, Danieli’s MIDA QLP with Digimelter system, stands at the forefront of global steel technology. Already deployed in twenty-seven plants across the US & Europe, Mi.Da systems are praised for compact design, energy efficiency & operational flexibility. Johnston said, “This system was selected for its global track record and ability to produce high-quality steel products reliably.” Its unique endless casting & rolling process removes the need for billet reheating & cold storage, cutting energy use by up to 75% compared to older, traditional methods.

Renewable Readiness, Reduced Residues & Regional Renewal

The Pinkenba facility is built to operate entirely on renewable energy. Its design targets carbon emissions of just 0.37 metric tons of CO₂ per metric ton of steel, an impressive 80% reduction versus traditional blast furnace production. This commitment supports both Queensland’s & Australia’s broader decarbonisation goals. Johnston underlined this ambition: “Our project aligns with global and national climate targets, while delivering real economic benefits to the region.”

Compact Configuration, Continuous Casting & Cost Competitiveness

Unlike older plants that require multiple sites & complex handling, Pinkenba’s single-site design will produce wire rod, hot-rolled mesh, spooled coil & bar under one roof. This streamlined production reduces costs, boosts speed & cuts logistical complexity. Johnston added, “By doing everything at a single site, we can offer faster delivery and lower costs to local builders, meeting Queensland’s growing demand for quality reinforcing steel.”

Historic Horizon, Homegrown Heritage & High Hopes

Set to be Australia’s first new greenfield steel mill in over forty years, the Pinkenba project is a milestone in both scale & ambition. Practical completion is targeted for late 2027. When operational, the plant will transform 100% local scrap into about 500,000 metric tons of finished steel each year, strengthening local supply chains & reducing reliance on imports. Johnston shared, “This isn’t just a factory, it’s part of Australia’s industrial renewal, built for today’s economic needs and tomorrow’s environmental standards.”

Local Labour, Lasting Legacy & Long-Term Leverage

Beyond steelmaking, the project promises significant social & economic benefits. Construction & operations will create new jobs, while the use of local scrap strengthens recycling industries & circular economy targets. Johnston emphasised, “We see this as an investment not just in steel, but in local communities, skills & sustainable growth.” Alter Steel also underlined its commitment to training & supporting the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

Key Takeaways

  • Alter Steel signed a $750 million agreement with Danieli to build Queensland’s first greenfield steel mill in over four decades

  • The Pinkenba mill will produce 500,000 metric tons per year from 100% local scrap using Mi.Da technology

  • The project targets an 80% CO₂ reduction & energy use cut of up to 75% compared to traditional steelmaking
