Methodical Mandate Meets Monumental Megawatt Mission

DNV has been entrusted as Owner’s Engineer for the Abydos 2 solar PV project, part of AMEA Power’s expansive 1 GW renewable venture combined with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system. Sitting on 20 km² near Benban in Aswan, and backed by a Golden License awarded in December 2024, the project is slated to generate 3,100 GWh annually, enough to light over 500,000 Egyptian homes.

As Owner’s Engineer, DNV will oversee feasibility studies, design reviews, grid integration, construction supervision, and commissioning, ensuring AMEA Power’s flagship asset is delivered efficiently and reliably.

Desert Dynamics Demand Design Diligence

The project must withstand severe desert extremes, temperatures surpassing 50 °C, dust-laden air, and intense UV. DNV’s technical remit spans three critical pillars:

  • Design Resilience: Tailoring panel layout and material specifications to thrive under scorching conditions.

  • Grid Compliance: Simulating and validating performance to satisfy Egypt’s interconnection codes.

  • Battery Safety: Enforcing DNV’s stringent protocols for BESS fire risk and thermal stability.

Santiago Blanco, DNV’s Regional Director for the Middle East, stated: “Projects of this scale demand both technical rigour & regional insight. We safeguard performance & reliability from day one”.

Synergies of Scale & Socioeconomic Stimulus

The Cabinet-approved $850 million initiative aims to employ up to 4,000 workers during construction, marking a major boost to local economies and workforce development. In company with its 500 MW Abydos 1 plant inaugurated in December 2024, the expanded facility exemplifies Egypt's commitment to renewable energy, aligning with its target of generating 42 % of electricity from renewables by 2030.

AMEA’s Ambitious Ascension in Renewable Architecture

AMEA Power, headquartered in Dubai, is scaling vigorously across multiple fronts, solar, wind, BESS, even green hydrogen. With projects spanning over 20 countries and a pipeline surpassing 6 GW, the Benban site reflects its strategic focus on emerging markets and sustainable energy access. Chairman Hussain Al Nowais lauded Abydos 1 as a landmark towards Egypt’s energy aspirations.

Technical Tutelage & Tangible Transfer

DNV's involvement extends beyond oversight. Quality assurance teams will conduct on-site evaluations; performance guarantees hinge on rigorous testing aligned with international benchmarks; and a structured knowledge transfer programme will equip Egyptian engineers with cutting-edge skills. Blanco emphasised that DNV bridges the gap between strategic vision and technical execution .

Decarbonisation Delivered, Desert Dynamics Diminished

Upon completion, the project is anticipated to avoid 1.5 million metric tons of CO₂ annually, bolstering Egypt’s commitment to its Vision 2035 decarbonisation goals . As a solar-plus-storage pioneer in North Africa, the project embodies ecological stewardship coupled with energy security.

Blueprint for Broader Breakthroughs

The Benban scheme sets a regional benchmark—its vast scale, technical complexity, and socioeconomic benefits illustrate the viability of desert solar-plus-storage solutions. With robust engineering oversight, large-scale employment, and community empowerment, Abydos 2 offers a model for future renewable undertakings across Africa and the Middle East.

Key Takeaways:

  • DNV is overseeing AMEA Power’s 1 GW solar & 600 MWh BESS project at Benban, ensuring feasibility, resilience, and grid integration.

  • The solar plant will produce 3,100 GWh/year, power 500,000 homes, and prevent 1.5 million metric tons of CO₂ annually.

  • The project will generate around 4,000 construction jobs and supports Egypt’s goal of achieving 42 % renewable energy by 2030.
