Pioneering Pyrotechnics & Planet-Friendly Paradigm Propel Production Paradigm

In a groundbreaking global first, Mitsubishi UBE Cement Corporation has commenced a commercial-scale ammonia combustion demonstration in its cement kiln and calciner at the Ube Cement Plant in Yamaguchi, Japan. The test seeks to establish ammonia, a carbon-free energy carrier, as a viable substitute for fossil fuels like coal in high-temperature cement manufacturing processes.

Ammoniacal Ambit & Avant-Garde Apparatus Anchor Alternative Advancement

This ambitious initiative builds upon prior ammonia co-combustion trials conducted in 2023 at the same facility. MUCC’s test installation, developed in collaboration with ammonia supplier UBE Corporation, has now evolved into a full-fledged demonstration platform operating under real industrial conditions. Ammonia, when combusted, emits no CO₂, making it a highly promising substitute for carbon-intensive heat sources.

Sustainable Subsidies & Scientific Synergy Secure Strategic Support

The project was bolstered by selection under Yamaguchi Prefecture’s FY2023 Carbon Neutral Complex Development Promotion Subsidy. This governmental backing facilitated MUCC’s transition from experimental-scale testing to commercial-scale implementation. Such financial & policy incentives are vital in accelerating the shift from fossil fuels to hydrogen or ammonia-based alternatives.

Calorific Calculations & Combustion Chemistry Catalyse Coal Curtailment

MUCC has already demonstrated the technical feasibility of replacing 30% of the coal’s calorific value in the cement kiln with ammonia. This partial substitution represents a significant leap towards fossil fuel independence. By fiscal 2025, a similar 30% replacement goal is set for the calciner, a key preheating chamber that operates at around 900°C for limestone decarboxylation.

Clinker Creation & Cleaner Combustion Cultivate Climate Conscience

The cement kiln, operating at temperatures around 1,450°C, is typically fueled by coal or waste-derived energy. Using ammonia in this energy-intensive stage avoids CO₂ emissions, aligning closely with global calls to decarbonize heavy industries. MUCC’s approach exemplifies how traditional infrastructure can be retrofitted to embrace greener combustion pathways.

Computational Craft & Combustion Control Cement Credible Capability

MUCC’s breakthrough is grounded in extensive R&D, including simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics & controlled ammonia combustion tests in small-scale furnaces. These exercises enabled precise understanding of ammonia’s flame characteristics, stability, and emission behavior, critical factors before scaling up for industrial deployment.

Plastic Pyres & Pyroclastic Partnership Promote Parallel Progress

In future phases, MUCC aims to synergize ammonia use alongside thermal energy from waste plastics. This co-firing approach not only reduces dependency on coal but also integrates waste valorization, reinforcing circular economy principles. It also prepares MUCC for diverse energy scenarios, optimizing operational versatility.

Green Goals & Group Governance Galvanize Global Goodwill

Declaring global warming countermeasures as a strategic imperative, MUCC is determined to lead the decarbonization of cement manufacturing. The ammonia combustion demonstration reflects its long-term vision to integrate emerging technologies, reduce emissions, also pioneer sustainable production practices for energy-intensive industries.

Key Takeaways

  • MUCC launched the world’s first commercial-scale ammonia combustion demo for cement.

  • The ammonia-based process aims to replace 30% of coal in kilns & calciners by FY2025.

  • Ammonia emits no CO₂ on combustion, offering a carbon-free energy alternative for industry.
