Strategic Span & Structural Synergy

Acrow Bridge, a renowned global provider of modular bridging solutions, has successfully completed the installation of a steel bridge in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Positioned near the Patagonia Mountains, the structure facilitates vital access to South32’s Hermosa project site, an underground mining venture focused on manganese & zinc, which are federally listed as critical minerals.

Critical Connectivity & Canyon Crossings

The 140-foot-long (42.67-meter), 30-foot-wide (9.15-meter) bridge spans Red Rock Canyon Creek on a rural route linking State Route 82 & Harshaw Road. Installed on a low-volume corridor, the bridge ensures continuous connectivity for local traffic while supporting high-capacity transport to the mining site. This solution was especially crucial to avoid bottlenecks during development activities.

Robust Rigging & Resilient Rigour

Designed by CPE Consultants, the bridge includes a TL-4 guardrail system and an aggregate anti-skid epoxy deck, enhancing vehicle safety in both dry & inclement conditions. The structure was engineered to handle heavy mining-related vehicles and delivery fleets. Construction was executed by Hunter Contracting Co., with crane-assisted launching marking a swift and seamless installation process.

Metallurgical Might & Modular Mastery

Manufactured using high-strength, galvanized U.S. steel, the modular panels epitomize Acrow’s engineering ethos, durability, versatility & expedited deployment. The components are designed to be assembled with minimal equipment and labor, making them ideal for remote or rugged terrains. This bridge’s swift completion demonstrates the advantages of modularity in extractive industry logistics.

Mineralogical Mandates & Mobility Management

South32’s Hermosa site, located five miles south of Patagonia town, is undergoing development to mine essential elements like manganese & zinc. As these minerals play a vital role in battery technologies, defense systems, and steelmaking, the project holds strategic significance for U.S. domestic supply chains. Acrow’s bridge thus supports both economic development & national resource security.

Temporal Transition & Territorial Transfer

Initially opened to limited traffic in March 2025, the bridge will primarily serve the developmental phase of the mining operation. Once construction activities conclude, ownership of the structure is expected to transfer to Santa Cruz County. This strategic transition ensures long-term utility for local infrastructure and integrates the bridge into the county’s road network.

Enduring Engineering & Extractive Excellence

Acrow’s involvement in extractive sector projects is well-established. According to Russ Parisi, Vice President of Acrow North America, the Santa Cruz installation exemplifies their cost-effective, durable design tailored to complex industrial needs. Eugene Sobecki, Acrow’s Director of National Sales & Military Business Development, emphasized the bridge’s ability to manage extreme loads & offer long service life with minimal upkeep.

Global Gravitas & Grounded Gains

With a footprint spanning over 150 countries, Acrow’s modular bridges have been instrumental in transportation, military, and emergency applications worldwide. Their quick-deploy design, resistance to corrosion, and adaptability make them a preferred choice for high-demand scenarios. The Arizona project serves as a model of how engineering agility can align with ecological & logistical priorities in mineral-rich environments.

Key Takeaways

  • Acrow installed a 140-foot modular bridge in Arizona to support South32’s mining project.

  • The steel structure is engineered for heavy vehicles & will transition to public use post-construction.

  • Manganese & zinc mined from the Hermosa site are classified as critical U.S. resources.
