Revamping a critical production artery

International engineering giant ANDRITZ has secured a significant contract to upgrade Tangsteel High Strength Automotive Strip Co., Ltd.’s No. 5 Continuous Galvanizing Line (TAN-CGL5) in Tangshan, Hebei Province, China. The project will enhance the facility’s ability to manufacture a broader range of high-grade steel for use in advanced automotive applications. With a planned commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2025, this modernization marks another milestone in Tangsteel’s evolution toward premium steel production.

A legacy of innovation and evolution

Originally commissioned in 2017, the TAN-CGL5 line has served as a backbone for producing galvanized high-strength steel at Tangsteel. It underwent a prior upgrade in 2021 by ANDRITZ, which improved its heating and cooling systems. These improvements helped the line meet rising industry standards. Now, the latest revamp is expected to amplify its efficiency, product diversity, and alignment with new mobility trends.

Meeting modern mobility’s material needs

As global demand for lightweight, durable, also environmentally sound automotive materials rises, Tangsteel’s new upgrade is timely. The revamped line will enable the production of next-generation cold-rolled strips, better suited for electric vehicles and crash-resistant components. High-strength steel is increasingly replacing heavier metal alloys, offering both safety and efficiency without compromising sustainability goals.

Expanding domestic and global reach

Tangsteel is positioning itself to better serve both Chinese and international carmakers. The upgraded galvanizing line will cater to elite automotive clients such as BMW, Fiat, SAIC, Geely, and Great Wall. These automakers are shifting rapidly toward lighter, stronger, also corrosion-resistant materials in their production chains. By modernizing TAN-CGL5, Tangsteel hopes to secure a more competitive position in global supply chains.

Enhanced efficiency, wider portfolio

The modernization will widen Tangsteel’s production scope. Beyond automotive steel, the line will also be capable of manufacturing cold-rolled thin-gauge steel and coated steel for appliances and construction. Improved automation and optimized energy use are expected to reduce operational costs, lower CO₂ emissions, also increase overall plant efficiency. These upgrades reinforce ANDRITZ’s technical prowess in the field of advanced metallurgical engineering.

Strategic partnership renewed

This latest contract deepens the long-standing collaboration between ANDRITZ and Tangsteel. It reflects mutual confidence built through years of successful project execution. ANDRITZ’s ongoing support has enabled Tangsteel to remain agile in the face of technological changes, sustainability pressures, also growing client demands. The Austrian-based firm continues to be a major player in China’s evolving metals landscape.

Supporting China’s green industry vision

China has committed to reducing industrial emissions, and upgrades like this play a part in that strategy. Modern galvanizing technology helps reduce energy waste, cut CO₂ emissions, and improve resource efficiency. By shifting to smarter, cleaner production methods, Tangsteel aligns with Beijing’s broader agenda for low-carbon industrial transformation and green manufacturing leadership.

Timeline and future expectations

The commissioning of the upgraded TAN-CGL5 line is scheduled for late 2025. While financial figures of the deal remain undisclosed, both parties expect tangible results soon after installation. Once operational, the line will not only produce stronger steel but also serve as a reference for future plant upgrades across China and beyond.

Key Takeaways

  • ANDRITZ will upgrade Tangsteel’s No. 5 Continuous Galvanizing Line to expand steel grades and boost efficiency.

  • The line will support production for major automotive brands like BMW, Geely, and Fiat.

  • Commissioning is scheduled for Q4 2025, helping China push toward greener industrial output.
