Eastern Steel’s Ecological Emancipation Elevates Environmental Eminence
बुधवार, 25 जून 2025
Synopsis: - Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd has launched Malaysia’s first Environmental Product Declaration for crude steel, backed by carbon-tech firm E-C Digital. The move advances the country’s sustainability credentials and aligns with global carbon-economy standards including the EU’s CBAM and upcoming SB Mark.

Declaration’s Dawn Denotes Data-Driven Dynamics
Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd now leads Malaysia as the inaugural steel producer to publish an Environmental Product Declaration for crude steel. Unveiled at the “Malaysian Industrial Manufacturing Transformation” event organised by Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, this EPD signals a shift from marketing rhetoric toward scientifically verified supply chain transparency. The report quantifies carbon and resource impacts from ore extraction to steel output.
Environmental Labeling Elevates Industry Integrity
EPDs function like “environmental nutrition labels” by detailing a product’s cradle-to-gate environmental footprint, including raw material sourcing, energy use, waste generation and emissions. Eastern Steel’s EPD is grounded in a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment following ISO 14025 principles. It covers mining, processing, rolling mills, packaging and transport, demonstrating full-value chain transparency beyond superficial self-reporting.
Verification Via MRV: A Milestone for Compliance
Ensuring authenticity, Eastern Steel’s EPD underwent third-party verification via Measurement, Reporting & Verification protocols. Auditors assessed data on greenhouse gases, energy and water use, solid waste disposal and air pollutants. The MRV stamp elevates the declaration’s credibility and readiness for climate-conscious procurement while preparing for compliance with Malaysia’s future sustainable product standards.
Carbon-Tech Collaboration Catalyses Compliance
The project was executed in partnership with E‑C Digital, a regional carbon quantification specialist offering SaaS-based emissions tracking. With its Malaysian subsidiary, E‑C Digital provided tools to map emissions from energy sources, transport, manufacturing and supply chain operations. Their platform enables Eastern Steel to monitor real-time emissions, benchmark performance and refine sustainability targets.
Export Imperatives & EU CBAM Courage
Eastern Steel’s EPD initiative anticipates Malaysia’s transition into carbon-aware global markets. Under the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, imports will face tariffs based on embedded CO₂. By adopting the EPD early, Eastern Steel positions itself for seamless market access. Exporters to the European Union can now present verified disclosures, reducing the risk of CBAM penalties and supporting Malaysia's export resilience.
SB Mark Synergy Signals Sectoral Strengthening
Malaysia’s upcoming SB Mark, expected to launch in August 2025, seeks to recognise eco-design and product transparency across sectors. Issued under the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia and CIDB, the SB Mark will allow manufacturers to self-declare environmental credentials. Eastern Steel’s EPD aligns strategically with this scheme, enabling application of SB Mark to building-grade steel products and bolstering green building supply chains.
Industrial Integration Inspires Internal Innovations
The EPD process has driven internal improvements at Eastern Steel’s facilities. Life cycle data revealed hotspots in energy consumption and material inefficiencies, prompting investments in high-efficiency induction furnaces, recycled steel blending, LED-lit process areas, and captured waste heat systems driving office cooling. The steelmaker plans to incorporate solar power at its Kuala Lumpur plant, reducing dependency on grid emissions.
Leadership Legacy Lays Foundation for Future Frameworks
Datuk Tee Choon Hock, Executive Director of Eastern Steel, emphasised the EPD’s role in reinforcing environmental governance. “This process builds confidence among customers, regulators and investors,” he said, adding that transparent emission accounting will underpin corporate strategy and forms a launching pad for future decarbonisation. He anticipates the EPD will inspire regional peers to adopt similar sustainability frameworks.
