voestalpine launched greentec steel initiative in March 2022, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050 through systematic transformation of Austrian steel production. The company invested €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) in electric arc furnace technology at Linz & Donawitz sites. Construction commenced in September 2023, possessing commissioning scheduled for 2027. The hybrid production approach combines scrap steel, hot briquetted iron, & blast furnace hot metal, achieving 30% CO₂ reduction. Annual production will reach 2.5 million metric tons of CO₂-reduced steel. The Donawitz electric arc furnace will produce 850,000 metric tons annually upon reaching full capacity.
