Tata Steel Nederland is now using trains to ship 160,000 metric tons of steel to customers in Poland and Slovakia each year. This change from road and sea transport removes 3.5 million truck kilometers from the roads. The company estimates this will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,300 metric tons annually. The new rail route is faster and also requires less protective packaging for the steel.
