Salzgitter's Sagacious SALCOS Stratagem Spurs Steel Sustainability
Salzgitter AG advances its groundbreaking SALCOS program, targeting 95% CO₂ emission reduction through hydrogen-powered steel production. The German manufacturer commenced construction of Europe's largest green hydrogen plant in February 2025, producing 9,000 metric tons annually from 2026. The initiative replaces traditional blast furnace operations generating eight million metric tons of CO₂ yearly. The μDRAL project demonstrates the world's first integrated direct reduction plant, enabling flexible hydrogen or natural gas operation during transition.
