Netherlands: Slag’s Surreptitious Spread, Spawning Systemic Scrutiny

A new investigation has found hazardous steel slag at over 216 locations across the Netherlands. The material, a byproduct from steelmaking, contains heavy metals and can contaminate soil and water. The Dutch government is now imposing a temporary ban after years of relaxed rules. Many local municipalities have started banning the material themselves.
