Elephant in the Room: India's Inexorable Iron Imperative
India produced 151.1 million metric tons of crude steel in FY 2024-25, a 10% increase, targeting capacity expansion to 300 million metric tons by 2030-31. The Ministry of Steel's March 2025 Green Steel Taxonomy establishes emissions benchmark of 2.17 metric tons CO₂ per metric ton. Current emissions intensity of 2.65 metric tons CO₂ per metric ton stands over 20% higher than global average. The sector contributes 10-12% of India's total carbon emissions. Hydrogen-based direct reduced iron coupled with electric arc furnaces offers up to 90% emission reductions. However, young blast furnace assets averaging 18-24 years against 50-60 year lifespans create transition challenges requiring massive capital investments.
