Hyundai Steel unveiled plans at the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 for a $6 billion hydrogen-ready steel mill in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, targeting 2.7 million metric tons annual production capacity. The facility employs Direct Reduced Iron & Electric Arc Furnace technologies achieving emissions below 0.1 metric tons of CO₂ per metric ton of steel, representing over 90% reductions compared to conventional blast furnaces. Initial operations use blue hydrogen from natural gas reforming alongside carbon capture, transitioning to green hydrogen from renewable electrolysis by late 2029.
