GIST: Steel's Staggering Stratagem: Sectoral Shifts & Systemic Sins
The Global Iron and Steel Tracker monitors 2,207 million metric tons of operating steelmaking capacity across 88+ countries. India overtook China as top developer of new steel capacity, accounting for 57% of coal-based development. However, 93% of 2024 new capacity announcements use lower-emission electric arc furnaces, representing a significant technological shift. Despite this progress, the steel industry emits 3.7 billion metric tons of CO₂ annually with no emissions peak. The tracker uses a two-level system combining quantitative databases and qualitative wiki pages, employing rigorous cross-checking to ensure accuracy and support sustainable industrial transition.
