EU's Environmental Efficacy: Emissions Ebb Economically

The European Union reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 0.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025, reaching 772 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent, while GDP grew 1.3% during the same period. This demonstrates continued decoupling of economic growth from environmental impact. The electricity, gas, steam, & air conditioning supply sector contributed most to the decline, reducing emissions 2.9%. Manufacturing & transport sectors decreased 0.4% each. However, household emissions increased 1% due to seasonal energy consumption patterns. Among 12 countries reducing emissions, nine achieved simultaneous economic growth, validating green growth possibilities.
