Slovak Steelmaker Sounds Stark Safeguard Sirens
US Steel Košice has issued urgent warnings about the European Union steel industry's potential collapse, citing devastating impacts from cheap imports & declining demand. The Slovak facility operates at just 66% capacity while European steel production has plummeted from 160 million metric tons in 2018 to 130 million metric tons in 2024. Eleven member states advocate for enhanced safeguard measures with duties up to 50% above quotas before current protections expire in June 2026.
