Nuclear Nexus: Novel 3D-Printed Steels’ Structural Scrutiny

Scientists at Argonne National Laboratory are studying 3D-printed stainless steel for use in next-generation nuclear reactors. They found that the printing process creates unique microscopic structures in the metal. These structures react differently to standard strengthening heat treatments compared to traditionally made steel. The research provides crucial data to ensure 3D-printed parts can safely withstand the extreme conditions inside a nuclear reactor.
