A Centre for Research on Energy & Clean Air analysis finds Bokaro Steel Plant emissions cause 273 low birthweight & 284 preterm births yearly. Though emissions meet regulatory limits, the sintering unit’s sulphur dioxide emissions remain unrecorded due to a regulatory gap. The report urges continuous monitoring systems & better filtration technology. Steel Authority of India Limited operates the plant, which plans capacity expansion from 5.25 million to 7.5 million metric tons annually.
