Algoma's Archaic Apparatus Abandons Antiquated Alchemy
Algoma Steel shut down its cokemaking operations after 122 years, ending traditional blast furnace steelmaking in favor of electric arc furnace technology. The transition eliminates three million metric tons of annual CO₂ emissions while reducing toxic pollutants including benzene & particulate matter. Community health benefits are expected to mirror Pittsburgh's experience where similar facility closure resulted in dramatic reductions in emergency department visits for cardiovascular & respiratory issues.
