Steel Streams Shrink, Yet Subcontinental Surge Shifts Sourcing
American steel imports contracted by 12.6% during 2025, falling to 25.24 million net tons according to final government data. Finished steel specifically declined even more sharply, dropping 17.1% for the year. Despite this overall shrinkage, India emerged as a stunning outlier with shipments leaping 118% to 553,000 net tons. December witnessed dramatic monthly spikes in specific categories, with reinforcing bar imports soaring 135%. Canada retained its position as the largest annual supplier despite a 31% shipment collapse, while Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea also recorded substantial declines. Germany alone among major suppliers increased its annual exports by 5%.
