Electra Steel Technology has introduced an extraordinary low‑heat industrial breakthrough, refining low‑grade iron ore into premium iron at just 60 °C, around coffee temperature. The company combines electrochemical and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract iron ions efficiently. By operating at such mild temperatures, this method drastically lowers the typical energy demands of smelting, marking a radical departure from traditional blast‑furnace processes that operate at over 1,600 °C.

 

Electrochemical Elegance Enables Energy Efficiency

At the heart of Electra’s process is an integrated electrochemical reactor that dissolves iron from low‑grade ore suspended in water, followed by controlled deposition of pure iron onto electrodes. This step is powered by renewable electricity, avoiding coal or gas. After reduction, the hydrometallurgical purification stages remove impurities, yielding metal with near‑industrial purity. The approach sidesteps traditional emissions and dramatically cuts carbon intensity.

 

Hydrometallurgical Harmony Harnesses Low‑Grade Resources

Electra’s method valorizes low‑grade ores previously deemed uneconomical, transforming them into valuable feedstock. Using existing hydrometallurgical techniques, enhanced by electrochemical advancements, allows plants to retrofit or build with relatively low capital outlay. This expands resource options and promotes decentralised production closer to mining sites, potentially reducing global iron ore transport costs and emissions.

 

Zero‑Emission Zeal Zafts a New Standard

By eliminating high‑temperature furnaces and fossil fuels, Electra’s refinement method emits virtually no CO₂. The reliance on renewable energy and aqueous chemistry ensures negligible greenhouse‑gas output. The process also generates reusable process water and avoids solid waste streams common in smelting. If scaled, this technology could significantly reduce the steel industry’s share of global carbon emissions.

Electra’s founding team blends deep‑tech, electrochemistry, mining, strategy and finance expertise. Co‑founders include CEO Sandeep Nijhawan, a veteran of climate technology investments, and CTO Quoc Pham, a specialist in energy challenges. This technology opens avenues for distributed steel production. Regions rich in low‑grade ore but without established blast‑furnace infrastructure, such as parts of Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, could leapfrog to clean metallurgy. Electra’s system allows for local processing with minimal environmental impact. It empowers these regions to add value domestically rather than exporting ores, enhancing local economies and reducing freight emissions tied to raw material transport.
