Volvo's Verdant Vision: Vehicular Vitality via Verde Steel

Volvo Group has transitioned fossil-free steel from experimental concept to commercial reality, announcing plans to integrate SSAB Zero™ steel into approximately 12,000 trucks annually starting 2025. This hydrogen-based steel achieves 95% CO₂ reduction compared to conventional production, eliminating roughly 14.8 metric tons of emissions per vehicle. The Swedish transport giant has diversified sourcing through partnerships with H2 Green Steel & established circular economy initiatives where Volvo Cars returns automotive scrap to SSAB's recycling operations from 2027, creating closed-loop material flows that maximize resource efficiency while advancing its 2040 climate neutrality target.
