Voestalpine's Visionary Volta: Donawitz's Dazzling Decarbonised Destiny
Voestalpine plans to fully electrify steel production at its historic Donawitz plant in Austria by 2030. The move replaces coal-based blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. Donawitz has been linked to ironmaking for over six centuries, drawing ore from the nearby Erzberg mine. The shift to scrap-based, electricity-powered production will cut direct carbon emissions to near zero, making Donawitz one of Europe's greenest steel facilities.
