€43 Million Short: Spanish Steel Says Madrid's Carbon Compensation Does Not Cover the Bill
Spain's steel producers' association UNESID says Madrid's proposed €157 million in 2026 compensation for carbon costs embedded in electricity prices is €43 million short of the €200 million the sector needs, a 21.5% gap that it says weakens competitiveness against European rivals. The shortfall comes amid an estimated €658 million in additional energy costs between March & December 2026 & peak-hour system charges that have led some plants to halt production. UNESID is asking for full compensation, predictable multi-year funding & permanent reductions in network charges for energy-intensive industry, arguing Spain cannot build green steel while pricing its existing electric furnaces out of operation.
