The world's first bridge built from fossil-free steel opens in Lund, Sweden, in June 2026. SSAB, Peab, and Hjalmarssons deliver the thirty-nine-metre pedestrian and bicycle structure over the E22 highway, using ninety-five percent SSAB Zero™ steel. The project cuts carbon emissions by seventy percent compared to a conventional steel bridge, saving around forty-six metric tons of CO₂. The bridge fabricator confirms the material processes identically to standard steel, proving that sustainable construction requires no special techniques or added complexity.
