The Loop on Rails: SSAB, Greenbrier & Alter Put Circular Steel on Track in Iowa
Three American companies have built a steel recycling loop you can see on the tracks. Alter Trading collects scrap metal, SSAB melts it in Iowa using clean electricity to make SSAB Zero steel with almost no fossil carbon emissions, & Greenbrier builds that steel into railcars. Those railcars then carry Alter's scrap back to the SSAB mill to make more steel. On 14 October 2026 the partners showed one of the 50 railcars, filled with recycled metal, to nearly 70 guests in Montpelier, Iowa, proving that circular steelmaking is not just an idea but a working system.
