Arctic's Alarming Ardour: Svalbard's Searing & Singular Summer

Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard recorded its warmest ever June temperature of five point seven degrees Celsius in 2026, matching a record set in 2022. Ten of Norway's seventeen June temperature records were broken across the Svalbard archipelago, including a new high of six point four degrees at Svalbard Airport. The Barents Sea region is warming at up to seven times the global average rate. Arctic sea ice on June tenth stood at eleven point one eight million square kilometres, the fifth lowest on record for that date.
